Hemorrhoids
Treatment of hemorrhoids
What are hemorrhoids?
Hemorrhoids are vascular cushions located at the transition between the rectum and the anus.
Everyone has them – they help to seal the anal canal.
Everyone has them – they help to seal the anal canal.
Only when these vascular cushions become enlarged do we speak of hemorrhoidal disease.
Causes
Common causes include weak connective tissue, prolonged sitting, lack of physical activity and
straining during bowel movements.
Being overweight, a low-fibre diet and chronic constipation can also contribute to their development.
Symptoms
Typical symptoms include:
- Bright red blood on the stool or toilet paper
- Itching, burning or moisture in the anal area
- A feeling of pressure or a foreign body, sometimes accompanied by discomfort
Pain is usually not caused by the hemorrhoids themselves, but by inflammation or small tears in the sensitive skin around the anus.
Hemorrhoids are located above the sensitive pain zone and do not contain pain receptors –
which is why their treatment is usually largely pain-free.
