Anal fissure

Treatment of anal fissures

What is an anal fissure?
An anal fissure is a small, painful tear in the skin at the edge of the anus.
It is often caused by hard stools, straining during bowel movements or existing inflammation in the anal area.
Typical symptoms are burning or sharp pain, especially during and after bowel movements.
Acute fissures usually heal within a few days.
If symptoms persist, a chronic fissure may develop, which requires more targeted treatment.

Causes
Common causes include:
  • Hard stools and straining
  • Chronic constipation or diarrhoea
  • Excessive anal hygiene or skin irritation
  • Inflammation or existing proctological conditions (e.g. hemorrhoids)
Treatment
In our practice, anal fissures are treated conservatively, gently and on an outpatient basis.
Surgical treatment is not performed in our practice and, if necessary, patients are referred to specialised surgical centres.
Typical symptoms:
    • Pain during or after bowel movements
    • Burning or stinging sensations in the anal area
    • Small traces of blood on the toilet paper
    • A feeling of tension or spasm of the sphincter muscle
    • Occasionally itching or moisture

    Our treatment includes:
    • Ointments or suppositories to promote healing and relax the sphincter muscle
    • Sitz baths, soft stools and adequate fluid intake to support recovery
    • Individual pain management and advice on diet and bowel regulation
In cases of chronic fissures, additional medication to relax the sphincter muscle (e.g. diltiazem) may be used.
All treatments are carried out discreetly, empathetically and with minimal discomfort.

    Our goal
Our aim is to support healing, relieve pain and prevent recurrence,
so that you can feel comfortable again quickly and enjoy everyday life without symptoms.
